CONCERT REVIEW
21
st CENTURY SCHIZOID BAND
at The NAIMA CLUB, Forli 25/3/03
This evening the music of CRIMSON will appear with a band
with the rather unusual name of 21
st CENTURY SCHIZOID BAND, a project that started last spring
with
Ian McDonald, Michael Giles (both from the original KING CRIMSON),
Mel Collins and
Peter Giles (who also participated
in initial projects of KING CRIMSON) and
Jakko Jakszyk in the rather daunting role of singer and guitarist.
I witnessed that line-up for the first time at the Canterbury Fayre Festival last summer.
M. Giles has now abandoned the project and has been replaced by
Ian Wallace (also ex-KC).
To be truthful I expected them to play at a bigger venue,
but it turned into a much more intimate evening with excellent sound and made the whole event
a much more luxurious one.
With tremendous impact the band
immediately shows its potential, with
"Pictures Of A City" - an energetic
overdose transformed into music.
In reasonable Italian,
Jakko announces the
composition of
P. Sinfield (famous lyric writer of ΚΡ) and
McDonald from the
McDonalds
solo album
"Let There Be Light".
The following song,
"Catleys Ashes", pushes
intensity levels up with a lovely jazz/rock
vibe with
Jakko's guitar and a brass-part and
Ian Wallace playing an amazing drum-solo.
Once again in Italian
Jakko tells us:
"Somebody told me that there is a phrase in English which you will all understand...fuck ...George...Bush!" this goes down a storm - not least for the outstanding quality of performance of "In the Court of the Crimson King" perfectly played/reproduced from the title track of the album. R Giles, outstanding bass player that makes every note an important one,
plays a short melodic solo hinting tracks from the album "Islands"
(1972) only to stop himself by shouting out "basta!".
The next track is
"Formentera Lady" followed by an absolutely extraordinary performance of
"Sailors Tale".
Incredible technical knowledge and extraordinary solos from the musicians increase the audiences enthusiasm. Mr Mel Collins with his jazzy and aggressive style
and
Ian McDonald with his elegance and energy are an exceptional duo of very high standard.
McDonald does lead-vocal in
"If I Was" which is followed by
"Ladies Of The Road".
Enormous credit must go to
Jakko for the entire set; he was good from the very first track.
His voice follows perfectly the footsteps of
Lake, Boz and
Wetton.
He is an intelligent and technical guitarist who tries to pick up the sound of
Fripp,
but with a great personality of his own.
The final part of the show is dedicated to
"In The Court Of The Crimson King"; first
"I Talk To The Wind" then
"Epitaph" which excites the audience tremendously,
this is followed by
"Birdman" an instrumental track from McDonald and Giles. This leads, inevitably, to the last piece
"21st Century Schizoid Man"
- this evening was presented in a slightly jazz-slanted way, giving more space to amazing solos by exceptional musicians.
Afterwards the band stays in the bar patiently answering questions of curious fans - a truly memorable evening!
The tracks are interesting, fascinating and emotional even after many times of listening.
A big thank you for giving us the chance to rediscover people that made a big contribution to new and innovative music - they will be treasured.
