    INTRODUCTION

    by Andrew Loog Oldham

Please follow me to introduce myself ... I've just heard Al Kooper's newest CD, "Black Coffee"; his first solo reply in 30 years. Al and I were born five days and an ocean apart. That specific calls for adept attention to the heart and the game. Al Kooper produced, arranged and played on two of my all-time favorite recordings, "I Stand Alone" and "Season Of The Witch" from "Super Session"; the bestest longest cut I know of outside of The ROLLING STONES' version I produced of "Goin' Home". Now there are three. Kooper has served via the piano, organ and deft French horn on "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the aforementioned ROLLING STONES; by his signature organ riff on Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone"; the "Super Session" album with Stephen Stills and Mike Bloomfield and Al's one-album-only stint with that magical vinyl moment known as BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS' "Child Is Father To The Man".
Mr. Ę was a Brooklyn laddie born of the time when stoops grew bronx Belmonts and Dion was pop's eloquent scion. The combination of the menage of Jews, Italians and Blacks produced a bundle of joy called rock-n-roll music. We became kings amongst our own, some of us lived awhile, some forever, some got fat and lazy, some got honored and knighted and some died.
Al will always be a ROYAL TEENS. He was weaned on New York City at 1650 Broadway. At the very same time I was sitting in a UK cinema in quaint Hampstead N.W.3 devouring Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster in Sweet Smell Of Success, Al was off-screen upstairs writing and hustling his very first songs in those actual Broadway buildings I dreamed of! He landed Gary Lewis & The PLAYBOYS' "This Diamond Ring", and scored with Gene Pitney's "I Must Be Seeing Things". Then came Bob Dylan Pt 2 as Al plugged in with him and helped him go electric. Al always prosleytized people into their perfect musical selves - a patriarchal maven of heal and shout. Next came The BLUES PROJECT; BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS; Shuggie Otis; session gigs with The ROLLING STONES, Jimi Hendrix, The WHO and the soundtrack of dear and talented Hal Ashby's The LANDLORD. Of all the directors clued to music Hal Ashby was the man. It is so appropriate that he rounded out the 60's by picking Al Kooper to score The LANDLORD and Cat Stevens to score HAROLD & MAUDE.
Everybody in our game who was part snake charmer, part talented muffin had to have a record label. It went with the rock-n-roll territories. Al formed SOUNDS OF THE SOUTH in Atlanta in the early 70's and racked up the first, and some would say, only three necessary vinyl outings of Lynyrd Skynyrd, all stellar and scored. Down the road apiece in England came work with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. I guess that's the closest any of us can get to being John. The rest is history and on his website, www.alkooper.com
And now, if you will, a taste of Black Coffee - I first heard "My Hands Are Tied" in demo form last year at Boston's Chez Al. All of us need a national anthem - it glues the rudder to the frame. When I first heard this song, I heard it as another for The ROLLING STONES. I got excited and said I felt it was the "Fool To Cry" the group could anchor to. A recording artist's job is to fill up space correctly, and tiz sure done right here.
"Am I Wrong", is as moving as the road. The road reminds you of who you are and what you are about, and the mandolin wind tunnel and turmoil here partakes of the heart on the road. "How My Ever Gonna Get Over You" ushers us into the downtown of Ray Charles and the red velour banquettes of yesterday when Johnny Ray and Ruth Brown were playing in the next room. The word "ex-tra-cate" becomes a novella from the palette of Al.
"Going, Going, Gone" unites Al with maestro Dan Penn, as these boots walk a long way from Ms. Sinatra - off the strip - and into Al and Dan's modern scenario of growing old. "Keep It To Yourself" walks us north into a Mickey Spillane homage to the 1650 world of symphonic blue collar pop, including the greatest American lyricability - the high priestess of sass, "sha la la" - Mecca is on the table and in the tympanis.
"Get Ready" recalls the sound of young America, back when it was what was in the grooves that counted. "Imaginary Lover" is a BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS stylistic delight. One would hope for a DVD of "Green Onions" and it's partner "Comin' Back In A Cadillac" taking the church and the wheels of joy to Norway. "Another Man's Prize" is another natural anthem, Kooper goes south on us with tears on the ocean of life and "recomendations" ... well, listen as Al has his sway. "Got My Ion Hue" is Brooklyn reggae in the ear of the beholder and Notting Hill Gate is Jah! "Childish Love" is top of the voice turning the page, feel the parchment, and "Just For A Thrill" has us tuxed back in the harem swerve of the night time as the right time. It all concludes with "(I Want You To) Tell Me The Truth", a laconic spellbinder of dust arisen as man, truth and lust. And thus ... Al Kooper. Al, your license will never expire, you'll remain the keeper of the gate. Just when the future of our music is questionable, along you come with the still of 30 quiet innings and then you raise us out of the ballpark with that joyous reminder that this music of ours is as real as every beat of our hearts. What I just heard reminds me that our music still loves me. Thank you again!
Now, could we have that cuppa tea, luv?
    No ???
    Alright fine ...
    Cafe Noir, then -

    Love, Andrew *

    1. My Hands Are Tied

I thought we had the greatest love in the world baby
I never thought you’d ever wanna look around
Then along came a certain young man, baby
And the two of you just up, up & left town
Well he doesn’t treat you very good baby
That’s what all my friends have said
But it’s not my place to make a stand
      MY HANDS ARE TIED
And I hope that you understand

It’s not that I’m a really jealous kind of guy baby
Ya know if you love someone I believe you should set them free
(Boy, ya know that Sting said that)
So what in the world have ya done to your life, girl ?
Ya knowSherlock Holmes couldn’t solve this mystery
Do you wanna stay with him , settle down & raise a family
Or is there something I don’t know that you need to prove
      Cause MY HANDS ARE TIED
And I think it’s you that should make the move

All’s well that ends well - that’s what they say in the movies
But in real life it never turn out that way
o here I am with noone I can hold onto
While you’re in some jerkwater town actin’ so blase’
Now if I could make love to a brand new woman
Ya know I’d never look back
But that’s not the kinda thing I could easily do
See - MY HANDS ARE TIED baby
Cause I'm still strung out on you

    2. Am I Wrong

      Am I wrong
      Fallin in love with you
      Tell me am I wrong
      Well
      Fallin in love with you
While your other man was out there
      Cheatin and lyin
      Steppin all over you

      Uh
      Sweet thing
      Tell me am I wrong
Holdin on to you so tight
      Tell me
      Tell me
      Am I wrong
Holdin on to you so tight
If your other man come to claim you
      He'd better be ready
Ready for a long long fight

      Well I gotta be strong
Well I know you're dependin on me
You know I gotta be strong
I know you're dependin on me
To give you all of my attention
      All of my time
And all of the love you need

      Oh tell me
      Am I wrong
Tryin to hold on to you
      Tell me am I wrong
Tryin to hold on to you
I just wanna make a home for you baby
And all of your children too

      Tell me am I wrong
      Fallin in love with you
Gotta tell me am I wrong
      Fallin in love with you
While your other man was out there
      Cheatin and lyin
      Steppin all over you

While your other man was out there
      Cheatin and lyin
      Steppin all over you

    3. How My Ever Gonna Get Over You

How my ever gonna get it back again
Back again the way it was
How my ever gonna get on track again
      And recreate that little buzz
How my ever gonna find that “mmmmmm”
      We both knew
How am I ever gonna get over you ?

What am I gonna do with all these little pieces
All these little pieces of my life
How my ever gonna put em all back together again
How my ever gonna get it right
And how on earth can I ever walk into
      Anyplace there’s someone new
How am I ever gonna get over you ?

Everybody thought we were the kinda couple
That you see in People Magazine
      All hugs and peachy keen
But you just up & said goodbye
      Without a reason why

What am I gonna do with all these invitations
When you won’t even RSVP me
How my gonna extricate myself from this situation
When my brain just keeps screamin out:
      EMERGENCY !
And if I ever see you out on the street, well
What in the hell am I supposed to do ?

How my ever gonna get over you ?
How my ever gonna get over you ?

    4. Going, Going, Gone

I went to put my old boots on this mornin’
They was cracked on the side,
Had a hole straight through the sole,
I went downtown to the store where I first bought ‘ em
They said: “Al, they don’t make any boots like that no ‘ mo..”

Now, thats the way my whole life just seem to be goin’, people
Like the world be playin some big ass joke on me
Ya know they just tore down the theater where I saw my first movie
      One day it was there,
Next day you couldn’t even tell where it used to be

      GOIN, GOIN, GONE
The things we took for granted that we always counted on
If ya had a million dollars ya couldn’t even try ‘em on
Today ya can’t find no boots like that cause
      They’re GOIN’, GOIN’, GONE....

We used to fall in love to that deep soul music
It was the voices of the angels and they never told you no lies
Now ya got pimps, gangstas, bigtime rappers
They made the whole damn thing disappear right before our eyes

      GOIN, GOIN, GONE
The things we took for granted that we always counted on
And now you only hear that music on some oldies marathons
Pretty soon it won’t even be there no mo
      It’s going going gone

I used to think I had my whole life before me
And in some small way I could change things all around
But now I feel that most people just ignore me
I got one foot in the gutter
And the other foot in the ground

      GOIN GOIN GONE
Things we took for granted that we always counted on
I’d rather play this old guitar than to strap some new one on
I guess I’ll play my song this way
      Til Im GOIN GOIN GONE
Even that beatup pillow I love to lay my head upon
      Will someday be my tombstone
      When I'm GOIN GOIN GONE

    5. Keep It To Yourself

It’s a lonely time - in the dead of night
      When your mind gets crazy
      But it don’t get right
      And you’d rather be someplace
      But you don’t know where
Yeah it gets a little scary
      When your soul’s laid bare

I think ya better KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF - Dont tell nobody
      Take it easy now
      KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF for now ............

If a friends got problems that are wreckin his life
And he comes to you now about his faithless wife
He says “I need some answers”
“The kind from under your skin”
      But your bed’s still burnin’
      From where her body’s been

I think ya better KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF - Dont tell nobody
      Take it easy now
      KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF for now ............

If ya got a nickel. if ya got a dime
And ya don’t have much else
Cause it’s a poor mans time
You might find a card game
      You might win it all
      Ya may wanna go uptown
      And do the midnight crawl

I think ya better KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF - Dont tell nobody
      Save your money now
      KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF for now ............

    7. Imaginary Lover

In all the years that I been breathin
I never seen the likes of you
You make a guy just have to stop and find a reason
Not to hyperventilate and turn blue

I saw you downtown in a doorway
I saw you uptown in the rain
I see you everywhere but you dont me standin there
Doncha think that’s just a little strange ?

      YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Girl if you only knew the things that we do
      YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Nobody knows how close I’ve been to you

      Sometime’s I get a little crazy
And think I’ll make you notice me
By the time I think of what to say you’ve already walked away
And that is why you’re just destined to be

      MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Girl if you only knew the things that we do
      YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Nobody knows how close I’ve been to you

      YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Girl if you only knew the things that we do
      YOU’RE MY IMAGINARY LOVER
Nobody knows how close I’ve been to you

    8. Green Onions

      ( Instrumental )

    9. Another Man's Prize

Sand in the heat and the sun in her hair
      Ocean at her feet
There was no one else there
And I silently wept as she turned me away
The tears on my face ?
      Salt-water, I prayed...

Daughter of a banker with the green in her blood
And me such a failure - just a poor fool in love
      Recommendations;
      Everyone said:
“You’ve just one thing in common,
You’re both out of your heads”

How could I be with ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE?
How could I possibly rationalize ?
Blinded by beauty in a web spun full of lies
      She was not my possession
      But ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

He was born into high stock of privilige and class
And there but for fortune still I never will pass
But he took for granted what I treasured for life
And all his trappings and riches
      Nearly cost him his wife

He couldn’t tell she was ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE
She just slipped through his fingers
“neath the glaze in his eyes
And as I was about to reach that very highest of highs
      It was my miscalculation
Cause she was ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

The worst feeling on earth is to know you’ve been used
‘Specially after that moment when two bodies are fused
When you build a false heaven - you’ve the devil to pay
And now that I know how I wound up this way

How could I be with ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE?
How could I possibly rationalize ?
Blinded by beauty in a web spun full of lies
      She was not my possession
      But ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

      She was not my possession
      But ANOTHER MAN’S PRIZE

    10. Childish Love

      No superficial love
Could ever get down way deep inside of me
But it aint that way for everyone
Love ripens too fast then falls right off the tree
      Modern Love is overated
I feel its way too complicated
      I want a Childish Love

      One that renews itself everyday
      I want a Childish Love
Where the problems of the world will never get in the way
I want a love so sweet & tender
I’ll be the borrower & the lender
      I want a Childish love

      Oh Maturity
You are not always the blessing in disguise
I wont let you get your hooks in me
I wont let you blind my eyes
      I wanna isolate original sin
Don’t wanna go no further than where I’ve been
      I want a Childish love

      One that renews itself everyday
      I want a Childish Love
Where the problems of the world will never get in the way
I want a love so sweet & tender
I’ll be the borrower & the lender
      I want a Childish love
      I want a Childish love
      I want a Childish love

    12. Just For A Thrill

      Just for a thrill
You made my life one sad song
      Just for a thrill
You came in led me along

To me you were my pride and joy
But to you, I was only a toy
A plaything, that you could toss around at will

      Just for a thrill
You changed the sunshine to rain
      Just for a thrill
You filled my heart with pain

Although you're free and havin' your fun
To me you're still the only one
Cause you made my heart stand still
      Just for a thrill
    (trumpet solo)

Although you're free and havin' your fun
To me you're still the only one
Cause you made my heart stand still
      Just for a thrill
      Oooh

You made my heart stand still
      Just for a thrill

    13. Comin' BackIn A Cadillac

Right now I dont have a dime
Most folks say the way I live is a crime
My telephone it dont get no call
I guess I dont amount to too much at all
But I know that one day everything’ll be okay
      Just ya wait & see

You might say I dont live high on the hog
Im unemployable - no one will front me a job
I live from day to day on a handout or two
And I can’t say a word when someone asks me whats new
But I know that pretty soon that i might hang the moon
      Just ya wait & see

Hey I’ll be comin’ back in a Cadillac
      Livin in some mansion
      Not some shotgun shack
      I’ll be comin’ back
      Sho nuff in a Cadillac

I dont own no suit, no fancy dress shirt
Anything I wear is usually covered with dirt
I dont have a woman or a girlfriend to love
All I have is faith in the Creator above
But I know that one day everything’ll be okay
      Just ya wait and see

Then I’ll be comin back in a Cadillac
Right from the direction of the right side of the tracks
      I’ll be comin back
      Sho nuff in a Cadillac

    14. (I Want You To) Tell Me The Truth

I want you to tell me the truth now baby
This is not the time to tell a lie
I know it’s hard for you to tell me the truth now baby
When it concerns the word “goodbye”

We’ve had our little ups & downs now, baby
And it’s not been as smooth as it’s been rough
See I’m only just a flesh & blood human being
But I guess that’s never been just quite good enough

So let’s just take a moment
And think about the good times
You say that’s all it should be takin’
Well then what about a moment
      Of contemplative silence
So you can hear the sound of my poor heart breakin’

      I know I shouldn’t ask you
      For the truth now baby
Maybe it’s best if you just go
And leave me all alone here
      With the truth now baby
I guess that’s all I ever wanted to know
I guess that’s all I ever wanted to know
