In imaginary sheet music terms, Hot Streets was a CHICAGO album of major firsts. It was the first to lack a Roman numeral title, the first to downplay the band's trademark logo, and, subsequently, the first to feature not one but two fold-out photos of all eight CHICAGO members (as rendered by 70s LP-portrait king Norman Seeff). It was also their first album recorded without original producer/manager James William Guercio, and the first in years to not be But most profoundly, Hot Streets was the first album CHICAGO would record without original guitarist, writer, and singer Terry Kath, who died tragically on January 23, 1978, from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. For the first time, the group faced the painful process of hiring someone to follow in the footsteps of a brother. "The auditions were held at [drummer] Danny Seraphine's home in Westlake," CHICAGO founder Walt Parazaider recalls. "The entire band was present, so every cat that came in [from top session pros to rock star wanna-bes] had all of us right on top of them. I'm sure it scared the hell outta some of 'em". "A big part of it was us learning how to give them all a fair shot," keyboardist Robert Lamm elaborates. "We set aside a couple of weeks and saw five or six guys a day. We gave them a list of songs to learn, a cross section of things that were challenging and some that Terry sang. We spent an hour and a half with each guy to get them comfortable, jam a little, then have them play". CHICAGO saw 35 hopefuls during those hard winter weeks. "After the first day, I went to bed at 7", Parazaider says. "Emotionally I was drained—With Terry we'd been through chicken bones being thrown at us on Sunday matinees, honing our craft back in Chicago. What guy was gonna live up to that? "There was one fella who played OK," he continues, brightening. "When he got done, he said,'Now, I know you're not gonna pick me, but I just wanna say that my wife and I have loved you ever since the band started. Can I have your autographs?'There was another guy from Cleveland who played really well, but his singing was suspect. Then Donnie came in". Cleburne,Texas, native Donnie "Hot Licks" Dacus was a fan of Hendrix,The Beatles, and Southern rock. He moved to L.A. in '69, joined the band Yellow Payges, and subsequently worked with Roger McGuinn, Stephen Stills, Boz Scaggs, and Kiki Dee. He was filming the role of "Woof" in the big-screen adaptation of Hair when he learned of the CHICAGO auditions. He prepped during breaks in his 15-hour-a-day New York City shooting schedule, then flew back West for tryouts. After nailing "Feelin' Stronger Every Day", the axe-grinding guitar of "25 Or 6 To 4", and the gut-wrenching vocal of "Little One", the 26-year-old Dacus got the gig. "Donnie was the least intimidated by us", Parazaider says. As trumpeter Lee Loughnane remembers, "He had a youthful fire, which felt like a good thing for us to get rekindled with." To coproduce the next album, CHICAGO called on Phil Ramone, an engineer-turned-producer whose successes include Phoebe Snow's Second Childhood, Paul Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years, Billy Joel's 52nd Street, and Barbra Streisand & Kris Kristofferson's A Star Is Born. "Phil had mixed some of our records and engineered some concerts," Lamm says."He knew our sound, and he knew us. He had a good temperament too.We kind of overwhelmed him in the control room, which Guercio never allowed" Ramone took CHICAGO to the world-renowned Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida, setting it up as a rehearsal and recording space, so the octet could create and capture their new music with a focused work ethic. As Pankow recalls, the band stayed in two rented mansions: the rhythm section in one, and the horns and a couple of roadies in the other. At Criteria, Ramone and engineer Jim Boyer recorded the rhythm section with guide vocals, then overdubbed horns, solos, and final lead vocals to retain the live power CHICAGO flexed onstage. "I loved the band and had great respect for what Guercio did with them, but they wanted a more democratic process," Ramone says. "I explained that this would be a decent musical playground, but at the end of the day we all had to sit in judgment of the work. Neither they nor I wanted to make a mournful album. Rock 'n' roll takes its victims quite seriously and does destroy.Yet CHICAGO was, and is, a very spirited group,'lunatic fringe' in their sense of humor!" That spirit bursts through on the LP's rousing opener (and first single), "Alive Again", where a fake-out disco intro gives way to ringing power-guitar chords (no wonder The NbA On C&S used it for theme music that season). Bassist Peter Cetera shares the lead vocal with Dacus, who takes his guitar solo using the talk-box device made popular during that Peter Frampton era.
On the song's layers of inspiration, writer James Pankow shares:"l remember sitting at the piano in my house. There was a picture of Terry on the wall. I started writing the song about a rediscovery of myself and a relationship, but as I got into the words I looked up at Terry, and an ulterior motive behind the lyric slapped me across the face. In an obtuse way I felt a connection with a renewed responsibility to the band and our fans. If you look behind the boy/girl thing, it can be construed as an encouragement that our phenomenal career would continue." The raunchy rock of Cetera's "Little Miss Lovin'" benefits from the background harmonies of the Bee Gees' Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, then cutting Spirits Having Flown at Criteria. Lee and Walt played fliigelhorn and flute on the brothers' hit "Too Much Heaven" in return. "Take A Chance" was a dicey writing collaboration between Loughnane and his second wife's sister's boyfriend, Stash Wagner (who'd scored a 1969 hit with Fraternity Of Man's "doob-ious" novelty, "Don't Bogart Me", better known as "Don't Bogart That Joint"). Dacus sings lead and takes the guitar solo. He also addresses his sunny career fortunes on "Ain't It Time", his first band writing break. "No Tell Lover", the album's second single, rightfully became a staple of soft rock radio with its wicked midnight groove and slow-burning cheatin' sentiments. Loughnane wrote the music, lead singer Cetera the melody Seraphine the lyrics, and Pankow the classic horn break. Bee Gees keyboardist BLUE WEAVER provided synthesized strings, giving the final mix its sheen. Equally luscious is Lamm's "Love Was New", which he sang; Loughnane steps up with his first recorded horn arrangement. Seraphine and longtime friend David "Hawk" Wolinski coauthored the experimental "Show Me The Way", as well as the dynamic, Cetera-sung "The Greatest Love On Earth". Cetera himself landed the album's third single, "Gone Long Gone", which harked back to the country strains of Chicago VI's "In Terms Of Two". Unquestionably, the album's finest hour is its title track, a quintessential crystallization of the jazz-rock suites that CHICAGO waxed in its early days. Drummer Seraphine and Brazilian percussionist Laudir de Oliveira drive and color the soundscape as Cetera's bass surfs atop the shifting tropical time signatures. Moving from 4/4 in the meat of the chart to 7/8 for the solos (Parazaider's nimbly darting flute, Pankow's off-the-Richter sectional horn break, and Dacus' simmering, Santana-esque guitar), the piece—musically and lyrically— finds Lamm working his way through some cosmic, soul-searching changes. "Hot Streets" is about spiritual time travel, if you will," the songwriter offers. "I was trying to figure out where I belonged and what mattered in my life ... especially after losing Terry". Upon Hot Streets' release in October 1978, CHICAGO were launched in splashy style with cover stories in Rolling Stone and People. They did a week at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre; their opening act was The Los Angeles Ballet, dancing to a medley of their hits. The band was also joined on tour by conductor/composer Bill Conti (then hot from scoring Rocky), who rehearsed orchestra musicians to augment key pieces. Casting a parting glance on the career hurdle Hot Streets—a platinum seller—Parazaider concludes: "We came through the other end of some unbelievable adversity. At the time it was all a big drag. Looking back now, though, it was one of the greatest times in our lives. It's when we learned that whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger".

    1. Alive Again

Yesterday I would not have believed
That tomorrow the sun would shine
Then one day you came into my life
I am alive again I am alive again

All the empty yesterdays have disappeared
Now that you have filled my life with love
No one else could ever mean so much to me
Every day my high lasts longer
As our love grows ever stronger

Yesterday I would not have believed
That tomorrow the sun would shine
Then one day you came into my life
I am alive again I am alive again

When you gave your love to me you changed my life
Dreams that once seemd hopeless come with ease
Thank you girl for being just the way you are
I would never try to change you
All I live for is to love you
      I'm feeling alive again
      I'm feeling alive again

    2. The Greatest Love On Earth

It's a long distance love affair
Tender are the moments that they rarely share
They hope their time will come someday
When together with the fraulein they'll steal away

It's the greatest love on earth
He's come from so far away to see
Is this his lifelong dream or just a fantasy

He's dying inside dying of frustration reaching out in hope
And he wants so hard to hide inside of her soul
'Cause that's what he needs to cope

It's the greatest love on earth
Her lovin' eyes are all he wants to see
And he knows that in her heart there lies his destiny

When she holds him in her arms he can feel the warmth
      Of her gentle ways
And when she kissed him it was just like making music
That no one else will ever play

It's the greatest love on earth
He's come from so far away to see
Is this his lifelong dream or just a fantasy

It's the greatest love on earth
He's come from so far away to see
Is this his lifelong dream or just another fantasy

    4. Hot Streets

      Hot streets down below me
      All the people moving slowly
As they search each other's faces
      For a trace of hope
      Concealed beneath their laughter
And it's only love they're after

      Mountains lie before me
      Skies ahead are looking stormy
      As the highway driver braces
      For a race with time
      To reach a destination
      Of his own imagination

      A child of the sky
      A rider on the wind
      I can fly
      A prisoner of time
      A dimensional crime
      Lost am I

      Winter stars above me
With a woman who can love me
      And moonlight swept embraces
Fill my space with joy and peace
      The sweet vibrations
      Of a lover's celebration

    5. Take A Chance

Take a chance dream a dream
Lay a bet down on me
I will see you with my heart
      Raise you with honesty

All the love I share with you
      Is too priceless to lose
For your loving I will gamble
      And I'm gambling on you

All the odds are on our side
And I know you're worth it
      Gonna take it
      Go for it

Can I play, deal me in
I'm a man who likes to win
Though I can't foresee the future
      With you I don't fear a thing

All the odds are on our side
And I know you're worth it gonna take it
      Go for it

    6. Gone Long Gone

I thought for the rest of my life
      You'd see me through it
Guess all along I knew it
Nothing mattered everything was all right
      When you saw to it
Before I knew it you were gone long gone

You said you would always be there
      Well I believed you
I was a fool to need you
Gave my love then I gave you my heart
      And then you flew it
      Before I knew it
      You were gone long gone

      Hard facing another day
      Just crying the night away
Said more than I meant to say
When I knew that you were gone

I thought for the rest of my life
      You'd see me through it
Yes all along I knew it
Didn't matter and it didn't seem right
      And then you flew it
Before I knew it you were gone long gone.
      You were gone long gone

    7. Ain't It Time

      Oh what a lucky day
      Things are going my way
Sun is arising mesmerizing everything I say
People all around this uptight town
      Someone's gonna recoginze me

      Ain't it time

Dues I've been paying for so long only making me stronger
Lady luck won't you please come to me I can't wait any longer
I spend all my time writing notes and rhyme
      Tryin' to find new dimensions

      Ain't it time

      Time for movin' on
      Time enough to grow
      Time enough to find myself
      Everything's okay
      What a lucky day
Time enough to play my guitar

Competition everywhere is getting all of us down
I've been makin' all the rounds I feel like a train on the wrong track

Don't get lost 'cause you might get caught going out
      The wrong door now

      Ain't it time

      Time for movin' on
      Time enough to grow
      Time enough to find myself
      Everything's okay
      What a lucky day
Time enough to play my guitar

    8. Love Was New

Remember when we were first falling in love
How we planned all the things we would do
Beautiful days and the nights all ablaze
Hoping our dreams would come true
      Love was new

Rmember the house at the top of the hill
How the sunlight caressed all the trees
I played all my music I sang you my love
The chiming church bells rode the breeze
      Love was new

Time has a way of obscuring our memories
And good times are hard to recall
Basic survival and day to day living
Leaves no time for romance at all
I just wanted to say I'm still falling in love
Every day with you, every day

Remember that Christmas with just a few friends
And the whole town was covered with snow
We laughed and we loved as we skied in the sun
It seems such a long time ago
      Love was new

Something you said one night started me thinking
How sweet love is as it begins
Taken for granted it slips through your fingers
And leaves you on needles and pins
But there ain't no way baby that we'd let that happen
Our love will always be new
I just wanted to say I'm still faling in love
Every day with you, falling in love every day with you

    9. No Tell Lover

Pretty smile lovely face and a warm breeze now I need you lady
      You're my no tell lover
Every night in a different place I'll meet you tender lady
      You're my no tell lover

Everyone keeps tellin' me that this affair's not meant to be
Even though I need you night and day
Walk away if you see me coming, even if it's you I'm lovin'

Every minute is an hour every day's a lonely lifetime
      You're my no tell lover
The little time that we spend together just can't last forever
      You're my no tell lover

Everyone keeps tellin' me that this affair's not meant to be
Even though I need you night and day
Walk away if you see me coming even though it's you I'm lovin'
      I want her
      I can't leave her
      I won't live without her
      There's nothing left to say
      I want her
      I can't leave her

Pretty smile, lovely face and a warm breeze now I need you lady
      You're my no tell lover
Every night in a different place I'll need you tender lady
      You're my no tell lover

Everyone keeps tellin' me this affair's not meant to be
Even though I need you night and day
Walk away if you see me coming even though it's you I'm lovin'

      I want her
      I can't leave her
      I won't live without her
      She's my no tell lover

    10. Show Me The Way

      Flying so high
      Feeling so low
      Fill my empty heart
      Don't say no
Can I get through this night, with some lovin' to show
Won't you show me the way to go--I don't know

      Won't you open your eyes
      I know you really care
You see these games you play
      They're just not fair
After all the good times and secrets we've shared
Won't you show me the way to go--I don't know

      I wanna take my place
      I wanna take my place
I wanna take my place with the loved ones
Well I still can't see how things were meant to be
Love me even for one day I'll treat you like a lady
In my heart you'll stay forever you know
Won't you show me the way to go--I don't know

      Marching into your heart
      Marching into your heart
