for the daily journal and photos of the 14 day recording experience

November 7, 2004. 14 days. 24 hours a day. It was the only possibility.

    The issue:
It was time to make my next solo album, but officially impossible with the DREAM THEATER machine rewing it's engines for the 2004 World Tour.

    The Tour Details:

Over 8 hours worth of music to learn and at feast 100 hours of synth programming

    The Solo Album Details:

An average 3 to 6 months to compose and perform a solo album

    The Solution:

Enter my studio for 14 straight days. Turn off phone. Ignore email. Ìeats delivered to the door. Air mattress on the floor for infrequent bursts of sleep. Total creative seclusion sanctioned by my family (the idea actually came from my wife, Danielle)

    The Pros:

Even if I didn't finish the album, I would get a lot of music written

    The Pros:

Is seclusion the kind of environment that creates depth and intensity

    The First Step:

Updating my Gear and Computer Systems. Conferencing with my technical guru / neighbor Richard Lainhart, brought me to the decision that the best way to go would be to get the APPLE GS DUAL processor machine with two 17 inch flat screen monitors. My friends at MOTU also set me up with DIGITAL PERFORMER 4.0 and their MACH 5 software sampler. I also had recently added a ROLAND V-Synth and a MOOG VOYAGER to my keyboard arsenal.

    How It Came Together:

All the keyboard parts were created and recorded at my studio with an APPLE G5 dual processing computer using MOTU's DIGITAL PERFORMER software. The keyboards were then brought to JGP for the mix where they were eventually transferred to DIGIDESIGN's Pro Tools to be mixed in with the other instruments.

Dani made CDs of my current work and mailed them every day to Rod Morgenstein, who was sheduled to start recording drums immediately after I finished my 14 day prcess. The day after I finished writing piece. Rod was learning it.

Rod Morgenstein's Drums, Daniel J's Guitar and Bill Ruyle's tabla were recorded by John Guth at JGP.

All the other soloist's recorded their own parts at their personal studios and either emailed them to us or sent them to us via regular mail.

    Guest Artists:

Pete Morticelli, Mike Varney and I worked together to create the dreamteam.

Drummer - Rod Morgenstein is one of my best friend on the planet - he has the musicianship, eare patience and intensity that I needed. Our previous work together in The DREGS, and the Rudess - Morgenstein project was good prep for this explosive project.

Yet, our frequent telephone conversations about time signatures someshow overlooked "What Four", so his perceived downbeat was in an entirely different place than mine. It rocked though and that is the version we recorded!

Flashback 1992 - First rehearsal with The DREGS playing "Here After". I had notated the song in multiple meters based on the drum accents in the recording. At rehearsal, Rod tells me the song's in 4/4 time.

    Guitars:

I met Joe Satriani on the DT / Satriani summer tour 2002. Many summer nights I'd find a spot backstage to enjoy my friends jams. It is amazing to have his magic touch here!

Vinnie and I had not recorded together since his Time Odyssey album of 1988. We have always looked foward to working together again.

Steve Morse and I met during my brief stint with the Dixie Dregs on the Full Circle tour. Steve has been one of my favorite guitarists and composers forever, and when I was writing I knew I had to have his touch on this album.

This is my first time working with Greg Howe. His playing has always impressed me and I am blown away by his contributions to this album.

Daniel J. is a new talent that I discovered about a year ago. When I first heard his music, I immediately felt that I wanted to be involved with his career, it's great to be able to help other musicians get their start, especially hardworking, talented ones like Daniel.

    The Bass:

Dave LaRue and I met in the Dixie Dregs as well, If anybody was gonna play bass on my album (and that was a big question mark) it had to be Dave. He can play anything, has a great ear and reads music well a skill that's a life saver on a project like mine!

    Vocals:

I recorded the original vocal tracks on the album, but I wanted to hear another voice sing the part before I committed to my own sound. I had met vocalist Kip Winger yaers ago trugh Rod. Thankfully Kip was totally into it and had a couple days between other sessions to record his part in his home studio. We rushed the tracks down to him and he quickly delivered both tracks back to us beautifully sumg and recorded. The goal was to have this album mixed before january 10, 2004, - the day I was leaving for the DT Tour. Amazingly, all my musicians were able to commit to recording their parts and sending them back to me within my time frame. Since all my guitar soloists had recording systems in their private home studios, part of my job was to prepare the tracks that they would need to work with. Dani and I had to record, stem mixes (Groups of separate tracks) wich would then go out to the guys. Usually my leads - bass and drums would all get separated, and then a general mix of the remaining tracks along with a separate click track. We would also create a MIDI file that would be used in the mix and by anybody who wanted to look at that data. John Guth prepair all the files to each person's specs and then zipped it back into the PRO TOOLS environment for the mixing process.

For the mix I had to move all my keyboards to John Guth's house. AH the keyboards were automated as MIDI information along with all the audio tracks until the mix was rsdy to be finalized for each song. Having the keyboards remain as MIDI data until the end gave us the flexibility to change the keyboards in any \ work with all the audio tracks.

One magical moment was when John was transferring a file that Steve Morse sent to us online. He was holding up à 64 meg USB drive that is no bigger then your thumb, at which point we realized his entire solo was inside there!! Technology can be really incredible!

John isn't only a PRO TOOLS Master but also a great musician and guitarist, and by time all was said and done had added some shaker to a couple of parts and played acoustic guitar on "Beyond Tomorrow".

The rhythms kept me going as I watched the time fly by "Rythm Of Time". Sometimes it helps to have a deadline.

    - Musically,
    Jordan

    4. Beyond Tomorrow

      I remember only yesterday
Seems like not so long ago.
      Moving sideways on a shifting stage _=i :.'¦ ^
Don't know where time seems to go.

      I watch myself turn away
      all in a memory
      rewinding just a single page
Now it's all coming back to me ...

There's a young man in an endless dream
projecting through a world of sound
      fingers fly and then
a silent scream always high above the ground

      I'm living - this moment
      Through all the years
Illusion - in my mind washing out the fears

One day I'll be far from here
A star beyond tomorrow and distance beyond
this sphere will lead me on !

    8. Tear Before The Rain

      There in the afterglow
      My solo world in view
      A glimpse beyond
      the world t know
An open door that I walk through ?

      And falling from the sky,
      a tear before the rain.
But will it pass me by -
      holding back again.. ¦

A man possesses wings to fly
beyond this space and time The rhythm of this
      heart of mine
Is beating like a battle cry

And if I let it go
      Will strength provide relief
frorn fearful winds that blow -
      only disbelief

      Tears falling
I'm calling out into the air
      My sun is rising where
      I stand - { I know - )

      One day I wake up
      and suddenly I'm found

      High flying man has
      been unbound (and so)

The hourglass is winding down as all becomes so clear
Now tears that fall are all around
and rainbows in the sky appear

      Tears falling
I'm calling out into the air
      My sun is rising where
      I stand - ( I know - )

      One day I wake up
      and suddenly I'm found
High flying man has been unbound (and so)

And here I am once more
I'm standing in the light much stronger then before

      A tear before the rain
      One tear before the rain.
