For years music fans and music critics have puzzled over the question: How can Victor Woolen play so many notes so quickly ?
Fellow musicians have wondered how the electric bassist — whether playing with his first band The WOOTEN BROTHERS, with his most famous group BELA FLECK & The FLECKTONES, or on his solo projects — could cover so much of the fret board with just two hands. Little did they know. At first the rumors seemed too bizarre to be believed. It all started when an assistant engineer from a FLECKTONES session got drunk one night at the Suffer, a South Nashville bar. He swore Wooten had come into the studio that afternoon and had taken off his black satin shirt to reveal eight arms. FLECK, FUTUREMAN and others in the studio just laughed it off, as if accustomed to the sight. They even called Wooten "Funktapus". The bassist proceeded to rip off an improbable solo — his four right hands plucking the strings with 20 fingers and his four left hands fretting the weirdest chords with another 20 fingers. No wonder he sounded like four bassists playing at once. No one took the engineer seriously until another loose-lipped studio visitor - a banjo tech—started blabbing around Nashville about Woolen's strange physiognomy. Before long rumor leaked onto the Internet and then it was all over. Soon there was a discussion site (funktapus.com). Heated arguments arose over the evidence. Was Wooten trying to tell the world something when he titled his 1995 debut solo album "A Show of Hands"? Didn't Wooten have the most suspicious clothing bulge since George W. Bush's jacket during the 2004 presidential debates ? Some posters insisted they had seen a third arm slip out in concert; others argued that it was an illusion caused by the speed of Wooten's playing. Then at last year's BEALE STREET MUSIC FESTIVAL, during The FLECKTONES' set-closing "Earth Jam", Wooten flexed his biceps a bit too much and his shirt split wide open. There they were: eight arms, eight hands and 40 fingers. A brief glimpse — as fleeting as the peek of Janet Jackson's nipple during the SUPER BOWL — and Wooten was hustled off stage. Photographs were too blurry to be conclusive, but the audience knew what they had seen, and the Internet buzz became deafening, fl When Wooten was born with eight arms in 1964, the doctors urged his parents to have the six extra limbs removed in an operation. His parents stubbornly refused; they recognized the additional arms as a blessing, not a curse. They carefully protected his unusual condition, but they also encouraged him to find a way to turn them into an advantage. They even bought him an electric bass. The rest is history, f Wooten decided that 2005 was the year to tell the world the truth. He's proud of who he is, and he wants to share it with the world. "We were just afraid of what people would think," Regi Wooten confessed, "but Vic seems to be past that now." Ö Victor got encouragement from one of his peers, Bootsy Collins, who has for years hidden his giant, wedge-shaped feet inside hollow boots that resemble platform shoes. "1 could see a cloud hanging over victor's head," Collins explained. "1 told him that it's tough being different and I should know. I had no idea that these mutations are caused by an extra funk gene until my personal physician discovered it. I thought I was some kind of freak—and 1 was, but in a good way".

    2. Victa

      Verse:

My Name is Victa, and I'm a winner and I know what I'm talkin' about. And Just 'cause I come out on top don't mean I'm leaving U out.
I'm a trickster but i'm not a sinner and U man not agree.
Before U start to criticize, are U talkin' 'bout U or me?

'Cause I'm your brother, your friend, I'm so much a part of you. To be the Victa deal with who U are before U worry 'bout what to do.
But i'm always on your side even when we compete.

      (Saundra)
Winnings not always the answer. All U have to do it play.
When U understand the message then U have to right to say...

    Chorus (Bootsy)

My Name is VICTA, and I'm so finger funkin' good U can never wash off this funk debris even if U could.
My name is VICTA and I encourage U to learn how he plays 'cause in practice there is a perfection.
Now, tell 'em what I say

    My name is ...

    (Bootsy)
And, ah, for all U players out there, I want U to pull up a chair and sit down somewhere.

      Verse:

My Name is... I ain't gonna say it. It's already on your mind.
Some may call it bragging but I ain't got the time.
I'm coming to get cha, thats right, look out, I'm sneaking up from behind, I'm sneaking up from behind you.

Don't worry, just a little bit more to say.
I might wait 'till tomorrow it ain't gotta be today
I'm gonna tell my story, I don't know where to begin.
The one thing that I know for sure; The VICTA always wins.

      (Saundra)
Ain't no worry in tomorrow, U just take care of today.
When theres nothing left to borrow, then U have the right to say...

    Chorus (Bootsy)

My name is VICTA, and I'm playing like a player plays
    (Yeah, set if off, baby)
My Name is VICTA, and I'm playing like a player plays
    My name is...

    (Bootsy)
Ah the name is Bootsy baby, yeah just put your hands right here, while I whisper in your ear.
And, ah, just in case U didnt' know, I'm hear to tell U so.
And , ah, just in case U didn't know, I'm hear to tell U so.
Let me hear U say "Play VICTA play" come on, come on, come on,

      (Bass Solo)
    Chorus (Bootsy)

My Name is VICTA, and I'm so finger funkin' good U can never wash off this funk debris even if U could.
My name is VICTA and I encourage U to learn how he plays 'cause in practice there is a perfection. Now, tell 'em what I say
    My name is ...

      (Bootsy-ad libs)

    4. Prayer

I remember back years ago I lived my life without too many cares, y'all
And the truth of mine so hard to find was hidden there between so many lies
As the shadows roll across my face the light appears and show another side now
Things I shoul know, no one told me, now I must go and I'm begging U tonight...

Say a prayer for me. Don't know where I'm gonna be, as I go on this journey
Say a prayer me, uh, I'll say a prayer U
Don't know where I'll end up. As I empty out my cup. So please say a prayer for me
Say a prayer for me and I'll say a prayer for U

Now I lay myself down to sleep I pray my Lord will send me someone to greet me
As the light appears it seems so clear the things I didn't understand before
Now I'm looking over all my years I see now who the angel was beside me
If I hurt U please forgive me. I still need U and I'm begging U tonight...

Everybody needs a prayer sometimes something to know that U care when I'm
Searching so long and hard to find a little bit of piece of mind
On my knees asking please, will U say a prayer for me?
Ask and U shall receive. It's hard to live in times like these
Fulfilling prophecies, over seas they're living with tragedies
It's hard to know what to do, say a prayer for me I'll play my prayer for U

Say a prayer for me. Don't know where I'm gonna be, as I go on this journey
Say a prayer me, uh, I'll say a prayer U
Don't know where I'll end up. As I empty out my cup. So please say a prayer for me
Say a prayer for me and I'll say a prayer for U

    5. Natives

Once upon a time there were some relatives of yours and mine,
the ancient ones that came before
We've done our best to lay them all to rest, it's hard to find them anymore
      (Now that's for sure)
But sometimes when I close my eyes I see that they're all still alive
Just talkin' to ya, livin' through ya, trying to get us all to do our part
      (So, when we gonna start?)

Heeeyyyy! We need another point of view, just do it, like the natives do
Heeeyyyy ! We need another point of view

I think I'll take a walkabout before the calendar run's out
A vision quest to open up our minds
The spirits keep in touch with me to let me know we're running out of time
      (yours and mine)
We all say that we're in tune but still we stay bed 'till noon
With all we see we still don't do enough
2 buildings fall. we're still in bed asleep.
What does it take to wake us up ?
      (I don't know)

Heeeyyyy ! We need another point of view, just do it, like the natives do
Heeeyyyy ! We need another point of view

    6. Can't Hide Love

      (instrumental)

    7. Stay

Send me 'round to the backdoor
      Front wont let me in
It's hard to keep being peacefull
When these kind of days don't end

      Things will get better tomorrow
At least that's what they say
When I wake up in the morning
      It still looks like today

      If I could fly away
      I'd fly into the sky
No one to ask me why
      I would be so free
      Just carry me away

      But on second thought...

      I guess I'll stay
Help you find a better way
      No vacation no holiday
I guess I'll do that another day

Can't get in through the front door
      Send me 'round the back
It's hard to keep being peacefull
      Stuff goin' on like that

I aint got no one to talk to
      Talking just to me
I'll see you in the future
      I don't know where I'll be

      I guess I'll stay
A few more games I wanna play
A few more things I wanna say
A few more bills I have to pay

(Thanks to Staple for these lyrics)

    8. On And On

I've got this thing for U stay on mind
I know U feel it too easy to describe
My heart is open wide and I send praises to the sky
Sometimes I just don't know what to do with myself
Yes, I've been carrying on and U know why
The love U give me takes my spirit so high
      And my senses come alive
U got me on this roller coaster ride that I don't ever want to
      end

I love U since the moment that we met. There's a spark in me and
      I will never forget
U lit a fire inside of me and there's no place I'd rather be
Sometimes I just don't know what to do with myself
Love, I'll be there for U whenever U call. Baby, U've got my
soul, my heart, U've got it all
Until the sun ceases to shine and there's no moon up in the sky,
      I'm gonna be right here.
      So, let's keep this love...

Going on and on and on and on. Baby U're good for me. I'm
      feeling the good in U
So, let's keep going on and on and on and on and on
I know that this is how it feels to be loved
So, let's keep going on and on and on and on and on
Baby U're good for me. I'm feeling the good in U
So, let's keep going on and on and on and on and on
I know that this is how it feels to be loved

We both made vows to be one for the infinite now we in it,
under dogs, least likely to take the pennant
Who are we now deep in the mix of our second child
And our life meter teeters and varies contained too wild
and true indeed sometimes it's over my head and hard to breath,
to suffer is all I see and light at the end is hard to conceive
Yo, but the story keeps going and flowing and so,
we gotta keep on knowing and showing that we here to stay
nothing can steal our love away so we moving on and ah, moving
      on and ah ...

    9. Cell Phone

Well I just got paid it's Friday Night. Feeling real good weekend in sight
Got a new phone, a new belt clip attached to my hip even got the chip
Now everyone can get touch with me. I got 700 minutes and weekends free
They even threw in an extra battery so I can keep in touch with my family

Now everybody's is all in my mix. I had to go and learn all the cell phone tricks
When someone tries to talk to me I just act like I'm talking on the phone you see
My signals weak, my battery's dead. It must be true. That's what I said
But if I ever get stranded I'm never alone

What would I do without my cell phone ?

You gave me your number and I said I'd call. You said wuz cool, no the type to bawl
You said you only used it for important calls but you didn't pick up and I know you saw
My name, my number pop up on your screen, but you didn't pick up, yo, what that mean?
It don't mean nuthin'. It ain't like that. Girl, you know I was gonna call you back

Aw man, stop playin', I heart what your sayin' and I ain't trying to heat that jive
I bet you got girls calling from around the world. Boy, and you know that's faul
Hello! Can you hear me now? I know you can hear me! Can you hear me now?
Don't play me like that. Can you hear me now?

What would I do without my cell phone ?

Alright, let's see if I can dial this number and check my messages

    10. Back To India

There's times I lay and close my eyes
      There's a pull I feel that I cannot describe
It's from the past, inside my soul
It makes me yearn for things of which I did not know
And it shows in my life, 'cause I'm intrigued so much at times I cry
And I know this inside, it's from the ancient days of old
full of stories to be told

Take me back to India. I wanna go 'cause I wanna know
So, take me back to India. I wanna go 'cause I wanna know

Take me there and let me be, let me learn the keys of harmony
I know I'm blind so let me see who the man is that I'm supposed to be
And I'll find a love that aims to take me to a plce above
Where I am right now, I need to go back there some way some how
      I need to go back

Take me back to India. I wanna go 'cause I wanna know
So, take me back to India. I wanna go 'cause I wanna know

I don't really know what I mean, but I can tell U what I see
When I'm lying in between sleep and awake
let me tell U what I'm talking 'bout

    11. Soul Circus

      (instrumental)

    12. Higher Law

If I was your leader I would do my best
to keep that residue off my chest
I would gather my congress. I wouldn't hesitate
'Cause there's a new law and it ain't up for debate

The good book says, as far as I can tell
      everybody's going to heaven or
      Help me find out Lord,
      gotta find a better way

There's a higher law we need to turn to and there's no more time to waste
We need to sit right down in the middle of the floor
instead of running all over the place
Open up your mind, it's time. We gotta leave those fears behind
There's not much time at all y'all, 'cause there's a higher law

Just like a magician, make me believe
that U ain't got nothin' hidden up your sleeve
Then U kill my brother 'cause U don't agree
It may make sense to U but it don't to me

I say going to church may be a start
But the good book is written in your heart
      Don't U wait for tomorrow
      It's best U start today

There's a higher law we need to turn to and there's no more time to waste
We need to sit right down in the middle of the floor
instead of running all over the place
Open up your mind, it's time. We gotta leave those fears behind
There's not much time at all y'all, 'cause there's a higher law

There's a new sun rising, coming over the hill
Ain't no use running U'd be better off standing still
And don't keep acting like we got to kill
'Cause it's time to go higher, higher, higher
      There's a higher law

A higher law we need to turn to, or we may have to burn thru
Unless we choose to learn through, through from our mistakes
'Cause that's sho'nuff what it takes to reach the higher ground
To go from lost to found, so when the end times come
      We'll still be around
Just like the song says, I'm talkin' 'bout a higher law
not the judge in city hall
Take off your watch 'cause the time is right now.
      U Ain't Listenin' Anyhow!

There's a higher law we need to turn to and there's no more time to waste
We need to sit right down in the middle of the floor
instead of running all over the place
Open up your mind, it's time. We gotta leave those fears behind
There's not much time at all y'all, 'cause there's a higher law
