LINER NOTES

At an early age he familiarized himself with the Rorth German organ tradition in Luncburg and he undertook a long journey to Lubech. Just to hear Buxtehude play. And later, in Leipzig, he wrote a large number of preludes, toccatas and fugues for the organ. All of these, especially the toccatas, delight with their dazzling virtuosity. The big Toccata And Fugue in D minor probably owes its great unrivalled popularity to the mighty opening bars, with their thundering chords and brief, tense pauses.
