Released May of 1975, (COLAMBIA CK-33484)
New City marked both the return of David Clayton-Thomas, and the return of BS&T to the upper eschalons of the pop charts.
Propelled by the group's revival of The BEATLES'
"Got To Get You In My Life / Naked Man", (COLUMBIA 1051) which peaked at U.S. #62, and got plenty of airplay,
New City pegged the album charts at a respectable #47.
Not bad, considering their last album stalled at #149. The album is currently not in print, although
"Got To Get You Into My Life", appears on just about every BS&T compilation album.
Billboard Magazine's May 17, 1975 review read:
David Clayton-Thomas is back with the first of the rock big bands as lead singer, and the result is an LP that is the most commercial and artistic accomplishment of the group's since their gound breaking second LP some years back.
Clayton-Thomas does have a remarkably strong voice, and a voice that shows itself to be remarkably adamptable to varied styles.
The band is also up to the task of handling a multitude of material, as they move through originals, old rock hits, BEATLES covers, show tunes, and Randy Newman.
Ther are lots of possible singles here, with each type of material done well and a return to their original sound. Best cuts:
"No Show", "I Was A Witness to a War", "One Room Country Shack", "Applause", and
"Got To Get You Into My Life".
Pop and Jazz Magazine says:
BS&T has suffered from an impeded flow of creative drive for the past few years. Once the leading example of the "jazz-rock" synthesis, frequent personnel changes and reversals in musical direction combined to weaken the band's overall approach.
New City finds the band in the finest shape since that legendary second album".
Downbeat Magazine wrote:
... it seems that BS&T may be on the road to erasing a lackluster image left by the last couple recordings".
Jeremiah Rickert writes:
Of all of the BS&T records I had sought out, this was the one I was looking most forward to. Mostly because I wanted to get the album that had
"Ride Captain Ride" on it.
I'd always liked The BLUES IMAGE version, and after hearing it on
Live And Improvised, I really wanted to hear it. I was not disappointed. From the opening riff of
"Ride Captain Ride",
to the final notes of
"Takin' It Home", I was wowed by this record. Talk about a variety of styles ... and the band seemed to be having a blast recording it, which seems to be an important factor considering their history.
Plain and simple, this album wails, and I think it's a must have for any BS&T fan. It's too bad COLUMBIA doesn't think so, I'd love to see this one re-released.
1. Ride Captain Ride
Seventy-three men sailed up from the San Francisco Bay,
Rolled off of their ship and here's what they had to say.
"We're calling everyone to ride along to another shore,
Where we can laugh our lives away and be free once more."
Ride, captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends you've got there on your trip.
Ride, captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be aware of the things others just might have missed
No one heard them calling, no one came at all,
'Cause they were too busy watching those old raindrops fall.
As a storm was blowing out on the peaceful sea,
Seventy-three men were sailing off into history.
Ride, captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends you've got there on your trip.
Ride captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be aware of the world others just might have missed
Ride, captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends you've got there on your trip.
Ride captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be aware of the world othersjust might have missed
Ride, captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends you have here on your trip.
Ride, captain ride on your mystery ship,
Be aware of a world others just might have missed.
2. Life
Mother, mother, just look what they done, done to your son
Father, Father, just look what they done, done to your son
Look 'e here, Mother, Mother
I have felt the mark of ten thousand teeth
I done seen my body lying limply at my feet
As I've seen my soul creeping out my chest
Out of my head towards the east, I've been victimed by the west
Mother, mother, just look what they done, done to your son
But it ain't so bad, I've been drinking while they're just having fun
Father, Father, look what they done, done to your son
Hey, Mother, Mother
I've seen visions of dol[hins dancing in my head
But I'm not gonna worry, might wake up in the morning, dead
But if I die, stoned before I wake
Lord grant me one last wish, please unveil my fate
Mother, mother, look what they done, done to your son
But it ain't so bad, I've been drinking while they're just having fun
Father, Father, look what they done, done to your son
Look 'e here, Mother, Mother
Mother, mother, look what they done, done to your son
I didn't know what I was told,
About the work of the Devil and now I know
Father, Father, look what they done, done to your son
I didn't know what I was told,
About the work of the Devil and now I know
Mother, mother, look what they done, done to your son
I didn't know what I was told,
About the work of the Devil and now I know
Father, Father, look what they done, done to your son
I didn't know what I was told,
About the work of the Devil and now I know
3. No Show
4. I Was A Witness To A War
I saw a little boy today
I saw a little boy today who didn't want this fight
The other children laughed at him
It was a frightening thought
And I, I began to cry
Someone asked why
Someone asked what for
'Cause something inside of me, something inside of me
Something inside of me said I was a witness to a war
I was a witness to what happened
And I hated what I saw
I was a witness to a war, to a war
I saw a woman dressed in black
Her husband isn't coming back, she didn't want him to go
They said he had to do his chores before
Their future could grow
And I, I began to cry
Someone asked why
Someone asked what for
'Cause something inside of me, something inside of me
Something inside of me said I was a witness to a war
I was a witness to the heartbreak
That some soldier's woman bore
I was a witness to a war, to a war
I saw an ugly field today
I saw an ugly field today where only crosses could grow
A monument to modern man, and now
There's no place to go
And I, I began to cry
But no-one asked why
No-one asked what for
But something inside of me, something inside of me
Something inside of me said I was a victim of a war
I was a victim of the madness
That we should have stopped before
I was a witness to a war, to a war
5. One Room Country Shack
I've been sitting here thinking in my one room country shack
I've been sitting here just thinking in my one room country shack
Well all I've got to show for this life
Is these raggy old clothes upon my back
I think I'll go down town, leave me one room country shack behind
I think I'll go down town, leave me one room shack behind
Got to find me a woman tonight,
I don't care if she's blind, dumb, crippled and blind
I'm just an ooo ooo baby, ooo ooo baby, baby now
I'm just an ooo ooo baby, ooo ooo baby, baby now
6. Applause Applause
I'll sell my soul for a song
Pay the price and carry on
And share with you some memories of dreams I can't forget
Lovers I have met
Applause, applause, let's give the prize
To the little lady with the stars in her eyes
Applause, applause, give the singer a chance
Treat him right
Be polite
Maybe he will dance
Applause, applause, give the singer a break
How much ca n you give, how much can you take
Give the singer a chance, give the singer a chance
Anything to buy your soul, and maybe he will dance
Applause, applause, he will stand upon his head
Applause, applause, he'll take you to his bed
And share with you the memories of dreams he can't forget
Applause, applause, let's give the prize
To the little lady with the stars in her eyes
And I'll sell my soul for a song
Pay the price and carry on
And share with you the memories of dreams I can't forget
Lovers I have met
Applause, applause, let's give the prize
To the little lady with the stars in her eyes
Applause, applaus, give the singer a chance
Treat him right, be polite
And maybe he will dance
Applause, applause, give the singer a break
How much can you give, how much can you take
Oh, give the singer a chance, give the singer a chance
Anyhting to buy your soul, and maybe he will dance
Maybe he will dance
Maybe he will dance, yeah
7. Yesterday's Music
Opened my eyes early this morning
Having found myself all alone
Sweet tasting midnight, still on my tongue
And a touch of tomorrow in my bones
Opened my eyes early this morning
And the whole round world was turning cold
Sweet tasting midnight, still on my tongue
Was it borrowed, was it bottled, was it stole
I can still hear yesterday's music
It's the same old, same old melody
Someone belongs to everyone
And no-one belongs to me
Well, opened my eyes early this morning
And I could not remember where I'd been
Sweet tasting midnight, still on my tongue
But I know I would do it all again
'Cause I can still hear yesterday's music
It's the same old, same old melody
Someone belongs to everyone
And no-one belongs to me
Someone belongs, someone belongs to everyone
Someone belongs, someone belongs to everyone
Someone belongs, someone belongs to everyone
Someone belongs, someone belongs to everyone
I can still hear yesterday's music
It's the same old, same old melody
Someone belongs to everyone
And no-one belongs to me
Sing the song with me
I can still hear yesterday's music
It's the same old, same old melody
(People tell me) Someone belongs to everyone
And no-one belongs to me
I can still hear yesterday's music
It's the same old, same old melody
Someone belongs to everyone
And no-one belongs to me
I can still hear yesterday's music
It's the same old, same old melody
Someone belongs to everyone
And no-one belongs to me
8. Naked Man
Old lady lost in the city in the middle of a cold, cold night
It was fourteen below
And the wind starts to blow
There wasn't a boy scout in sight
Pull down the shades cause he's coming, turn out the lights cause he's here
Running down the street
Through the snow and the sleet
On the coldest night of the year
Beware, beware, beware of the naked man
Old lady head up toward broad stree, shuffling uptown against the wind
She'd started to cry,
Wiped a tear
From her eye
Looked back to see where she had been
Old lady stand on the corner with a purse in her hand
She does not know
But in a minute or so
She will be robbed by a naked man
Beware, beware, beware of the naked man
Old lady lean against a lamppost, staring down at the ground on which she stand
She look up and screamed
In the lamplight's beam
There stood the famous naked man
He say, they found out about my sister, they kicked me out of the navy,
They would have strung me up if they could.
I tried to explain that we were both of us lazy
And were doing the best we could.
Well he faked to the left and he faked to the right
And the purse was snatched from her hand
Someone stop me, he cried,
As he faded from sight,
Won't nobody help a naked man? Oh Lord
Won't nobody help a naked man?
Beware, beware, beware of the naked man
9. Got To Get You Into My Life
I was alone, I took a ride, I didn't know what I would find there
Another road where maybe I could find another kind of mind there
Ooo, then I suddenly see you
Ooo, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life
You didn't run, you didn't lie, you know I wanted just to hold you
And had you gone, you knew in time we'd meet again for I had told you
Ooo, you were meant to be near me
Ooo, and I want you to hear me
Say we'll be together every day
Got to get you into my life
What can I do, what can I be, when I'm with you I want to stay there
If I'm true I'll never leave and if I do I know the way there
Ooo, then I suddenly see you
Ooo, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life
Got to get you into my life, got to get you into my life
I was alone, I took a ride, I didn't know what I would find there
Another road where maybe I could find another kind of mind there
Ooo, you know I need my baby
Ooo,you know I need my baby
Don't say "I'll see you"
Did I tell you that I need you
Every single day ....
