On "Long Walk Home", the soundtrack to the movie "Rabbit Proof Fence", Peter Gabriel ably recreates
the atmosphere of the Australian outback that provides the film's bleak setting.
Utilizing Aboriginal percussion, instruments and chanting as well as natural sounds like native birdsongs,
Gabriel captures the seemingly vast emptiness and stillness of this massive desert and while hinting at its fecund underbelly.
Unemotional throughout, "Long Walk Home" is without obvious peaks of joy or valleys of sorrow,
offering instead a steadfast, unerring journey. It isn't until Home reaches its mournful conclusion with "Cloudless"
that Gabriel pitches more conventional music behind a full chorale of human voices, and the earthy finally overtakes the ethereal.
