Power, beauty, joy. Together these words aren't usually
associated with rock & roll; not many rock bands can
move their audience between laughter and tears within
the same song. But Yes isn't like many rock bands and the
term 'song' seems almost inappropriate lor what is a
journey through musical landscapes.
Those who embrace YES music are a passionate lot; the
synergy that exists between the YES musicians and their
devotees have few parallels. The unique musical style of
each YES member inluses their songwriting, resulting in
music of a sometimes sweeping cinematic nature. This is
not blues-based rock where chord structures and
patterns have a semblance of over familiarity.
This is music of the world, at times even transcending
this world altogether.
Yet, it invites involvement due to soaring
instrumental passages combined with strong melodic content,
performed by a collection of recognized and gifted talents.
The playing can figuratively grab and shake you by
the lapels while the sweet vocals oiler an infectious and
irresistible sing along quality.
The songs of YES don't become a part ol the public
consciousness as do those of most popular artists. It's unlikely
their music will be heard accompanying an elevator or
a shopping cart. Ironically, this is a testament to the
originality and creativity ol the compositions which are as
much about innovative playing and arranging as they are
about catchy hooks. YES have always created imaginative
arrangements, first evident in their renditions of others' songs.
YES didn't simply cover tunes, they turned them
inside out: one moment playing aggressively, the next
quietly and always with a natural link between the two.
These sudden shifts would be contrived in the hands of lesser talents
but with the masterful individuals who have graced
YES it was a successful and natural progression, done with the utmost of finesse.
The music saluted in this collection follows in the YES tradition
of excellence. Some tracks are laithful contemplations of
structures and styles while others are total
transmutations that rearrange the components into something
new and invigorating. It is a collection with some surpris-ing
selections that nevertheless demonstrate the strength
and longevity of the music. The wide range of emotions
inherent in the music of YES is clearly evident in the
performances by the skillful artists contained herein.
Long live the music of YES.
