TONY BANKS IN CONVERSATION WITH ALAN HEWITT ABOUT "THE WICKED LADY"
- AH: You've already mentioned that at the same time you were doing all of this you were also doing The Wicked Lady soundtrack. It was quite a controversial film in it's own way as the Board of Censors wanted to ban it from domestic release because of the whipping scene.
- TB: That's down to Michael Winner, he always tries to push things as far as he can to get some publicity! (laughter)
- AH: How did you actually become involved with that project?
- TB: Well, the guy from Atlantic Records over here, Phil Carson, was approached by Michael Winner. He'd already done something with Jimmy Page and he said, "Do you know anyone who might want to do this film thing?" and Phil Carson said, "Well this guy Tony Banks, he wants to do it". So he came to me and I must admit that I wasn't a hundred per cent sure about doing it but I decided to do it anyway. I worked on that particularly as it was to be an orchestral soundtrack and I was doing the Fugitive at the same time, so I worked with an arranger on that. So in a sense a lot of what you hear on that is him really in terms of what the orchestrations are. With a lot of the pieces I just played them on the piano and recorded them and then he orchestrated it; some of them very faithfully and others he adapted more than perhaps he should have done but it was fun to do and all the main themes sounded great with the orchestra. The main moment that it was used was during a soft porn sequence (laughter), which wasn't quite right and it wasn't what I'd intended, it was supposed to have this beautiful melody and I had all sorts of images for it. Anyhow, it was great fun to do and in contrast with The Shout, The Wicked Lady had the music really up front and it sounded great. When I saw it at the cinema it sounded fantastic and it made me want to do more.
- AH: Did you actually enjoy working with an orchestra this time around rather than with a band?
- TB: Well it was great fun to have that and I felt a bit daunted by that. I was there for all the recordings but I didn't get involved directly. Everything was done through this guy Christopher Palmer who was the orchestrator. Working with people that are professionals in this field, it's a different approach. They look at music differently to how I would and that's what's great about it, it's one take and it's there and it sounds fantastic! There's none of this overdubbing and cheating (laughter) to make it sound good and I did love that although it did end up a little syrupy at times.
On the second side of the album I actually did my versions of some of these pieces, which were really just the demos. I did this awful version of the main theme with a drum machine which was done specifically because Phil Carson said, "Do a rhythm version!", so that they could put it out as a single. I heard it the other day actually and I thought it was embarrassing!
- AH: The other surprise from that project was the single. It was extremely low key.
- TB: It was a bad move. I don't think it should ever have been a single. I think we should have just put out the album and if the film had been a success then the album would have done OK - that's how it works with films. As it was, it was never going to do anything but I think that a couple of the things on there sound good. Musically I can't remember all that much about it apart from the main orchestral theme which I thought was very good.
- AH: A lot of people like that album an awful lot and they wonder why it's the only one that hasn't been released on CD.
- TB: It's down to the fact that it was on Atlantic, that's why. If the album sold five hundred copies I'd be surprised and to put out a CD costs them money. For the sake of completion if someone like Virgin will get hold of it then it's possible. From their point of view they don't think it's worth it and we haven't put much pressure on them for it. It would be quite nice if it was available.
- AH: As you've pointed out, the main problem for many people is actually finding the album, it's quite hard to find.
- TB: Bloody hard to find! (laughter) I mean, I see my role within the group as providing all the rarities! (laughter). There are a few really obscure things throughout my career with all these singles.

- The Project – 3 years in the making - features Corey Harris, Frankie Paul, The MEDITATIONS, Sluggy Ranks, Dr. Israel, Gary "Nesta" Pine, RANKING JOE and others.
- Release coincides with 30th anniversary of original album.
- On February 18, EASY STAR RECORDS will release DUB SIDE OF THE MOON, an ambitious reinvention of PINK FLOYD’s classic The Dark Side Of The Moon album as envisioned by the label’s in-house production team of Michael G and Victor Axelrod a.k.a. Ticklah,
who make up the EASY STAR All-Stars. The album, three years in the making, features vocal contributions from roots / blues stalwart Corey Harris,
as well as a virtual who’s who of modern reggae artists: top dancehall veteran Frankie Paul, WAILERS singer Gary “Nesta” Pine, beloved harmony trio The MEDITATIONS, Brooklyn pacesetter Dr. Israel, legendary toaster RANKING JOE,
frequent EASY STAR contributor Sluggy Ranks, and talented newcomers Kirsty Rock and DOLLAMAN.
On the instrumental side, DUB SIDE features a gathering of musicians at the vanguard of NYC’s reggae, soul, afro-beat and electronic dance communities.
DUB SIDE’s personnel have contributed to recordings by the likes of Gil-Scott Heron, Antibalas AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA, The SOUL PROVIDERS, The DAKTARIS, ROOTS COMBINATION, KING CHANGO, and TRU MYSTIC SOUND SYSTEM, among others.
- The idea for DUB SIDE OF THE MOON was first hatched in 1999 by EASY STAR RECORDS vice president Lem Oppenheimer.
PINK FLOYD’s challenging masterpiece had been one of his favorite albums as a teenager, but after years as a reggae obsessive, he imagined a re-working of the original that would echo Dark Side’s album artwork—refracting PINK FLOYD’s music vision through a prism of reggae’s rich rhythmic and instrumental possibilities.
Soon, the other EASY STAR principals, Eric Smith, Michael Goldwasser, and Remy Gerstein, along with ESAS keyboardist/producer Ticklah, joined Oppenheimer in exploring these possibilities.
They found PINK FLOYD’s original compositions to be a natural conduit for their reggae/dub sensibilities. Four years later, as the original Dark Side approaches its 30th anniversary, the ESAS have emerged with a fascinating reggae version of the album that captures all of the resonant nuances of the original (right down to the “Wizard of Oz” synchronicity).
- DUB SIDE is an ambitious experiment in reggae rhythms and trip-hop sounds and a remarkably elemental complement to the original.
As producers and instrumentalists, Michael G. and Ticklah were careful to match the spoken interludes, sound effects, and timing of PINK FLOYD's original,
while still twisting the music into a completely fresh new vision.

- In 1990, when most of the original members of Yes were working under the name
ANDERSON BRUFORD WAKEMAN HOWE for legal reasons, Jon Anderson recorded a batch of demos for what would have been the second ABWH album.
When the band reunited with Chris Squire under their original moniker, the ABWH project was abandoned, and the songs fell between the cracks.
This collection preserves those demos as a part of YES history. The arrangements are fairly bare-bones, mostly electronic, but one can imagine the elaborate sonic garments of the YES men being draped over the skeletons of these songs without too much effort.

- Back in 1976 Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons created "Tales Of Mystery And Imagination",
in 2003 Eric Woolfson revisits the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe with his album "Poe".
While some tracks are obviously about some of Poe's great works, other songs are more about the man himself.
- The album was first released September 29, 2003 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Then on October 27, 2003 in Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
And later on November 17, 2003 in the UK.
SLEEVE NOTES:
My fascination with the world of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) began more than thirty years ago. It led to the creation of the Alan Parsons Project and the first album Tales Of Mystery And Imagination Edgar Allan Poe in 1976. At that time, I already had in mind a volume two of Tales , but a change of record labels took the APP in other directions.
Some years later, I decided it was time for me to revisit my hero, Poe, or Eddy as his friends called him. The first result of this was a stage musical and a concert version of POE which tells the story of his extraordinary life and works.
I realized that half of the songs in the musical contained the basis for a possible follow-up to Tales and after preliminary work in my own studio, I went back into the legendary Abbey Road Studios where More Tales Of Mystery And Imagination was completed.
During the recordings, I had the immense good fortune to be introduced to Steve Balsamo. His remarkable voice lifted the tracks to a level I had not previously experienced and I pay full tribute to him and the many other talented and dedicated musicians, singers and studio engineers without whom I could not have fulfilled my dream of making a worthy follow up.
This current work includes many of Poe's most famous tales and poems but also includes glimpses of episodes in his life. A life, in many cases, even more bizarre and tortured than his literary works.
The supreme irony of this literary giant surely lies in the fact that though constantly in poverty or debt for nearly all of his life, a copy of his first published poem Tamerlane would sell at auction today for over half a million dollars. It is probably the highest priced item of classical American literature.
In death he also achieved world-wide success and acknowledgement as the the genius who devised the genres of the Detective Novel and Science Fiction .
- To me, the greatest compliment that has been paid to recordings of my work is that they are Cinematic and while listening, if you close your eyes, you can see pictures. Without wishing to intrude into the creative imaginations of the listener, I have included a brief reference to the literary work or event in Poe's life that originally inspired my work.
The instrumental "Angel Of The Odd"
is the title of one of Poe's quirkiest stories.
"Wings Of Eagles" expresses the way he saw the world.
The commonplace becomes distorted into fantasy. Reality assumes an overwhelming intensity, creating an emotional roller-coaster for his turbulent emotions.
Poe as an infant was introduced to gin and laudanum (an opiate), by an exhausted, though well-meaning nanny.
Little wonder that this led to problems throughout his life.
Shortly before his death, Poe was found badly beaten and left for dead outside a tavern which had served as a polling station in a local election.
"Train To Freedom" was inspired by the atmosphere of the political campaigning that might have prevailed in that bar.
Untimely death was a recurring feature of Poe's life and works.
Possibly, his inability to come to terms with the death of his mother when he was three years old, found an outlet in so many of his stories of premature burials and the beautiful, though ghostly heroines of his poetry.
All of this is reflected in "Somewhere In The Audience".
It was the sound of words even more than their meaning that enthused Poe.
His poem "The Bells" is an outstanding example.
To me, the most graphic of Poe's tales is "The Pit And The Pendulum",
which tells the story of a helpless victim of the Spanish Inquisition.
"The Murders In The Rue Morgue" is the first detective novel and Poe's fictional sleuth.
C. Auguste Dupin was the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes some sixty years later.
"Tiny Star" is a further reflection on the mother who died when Eddy was three years old.
The song is a remembrance of a lullaby that she might have sung.
His marriage to his young cousin Virginia inspired "Goodbye To All That".
She, like his mother, was to die at age twenty four.
Rufus Griswold was a jealous rival. Although he was Poe's literary executor, when Poe died, he wrote a poisonous obituary and did everything he could to bury his works along with the man.
Despite Griswold's efforts, Poe eventually took his rightful place as one of the greatest literary geniuses of all time. The song,
"Immortal" is a reflection on the presence of Poe's everlasting spirit.
